Sunlight and gorgeous buildings is what awaits us when travelling to Spain. These aren’t the only things, however, making the country special. We compiled 10 facts you wouldn’t have expected about Spain.

  1. Madrid isn’t only its capital, but also lays in the middle of the country geographically! You can find a stone called Kilometre Zero in the city, which officially marks the very middle of the country: 0 km.
  2. There are 406 million Spanish speakers in the world, more, than there are English speakers.
  3. There are four official languages in Spain other than Spanish: regionally varying the official language can be Catalan, Galician, Basque and Aranian.
  4. The highest Spanish mountain isn’t found on the peninsula! 😊Mount Teide is located on Tenerife, the largest of the Canary islands.
  5. UNESCO registers 44 World Heritage Sites in Spain.
  6. The Altamira cave lies near Santander. Many prehistoric drawings were found there, earning it the jestful moniker ’prehistoric Sistine Chapel’.
  7. The Spanish were the first to bring in chocolate to Europe. We can’t thank them enough for that!
  8. Eating 12 grapes at once at midnight on New Year’s Eve is a Spanish tradition, supposedly bringing luck in the rest of the new year!
  9. People in Spain tend to speak louder, meaning, that in crowds, the Spanish are most likely to get noticed first.
  10. Don Quijote was written in 1605 by Miguel de Cervantes. This was the first book to be translated into any language, after just the Bible.
