It probably isn’t too surprising to you to find an article about fish on a webshop for fish. We gathered some interesting funfacts about one of our favorite foods, fish, that you might not have known before.
- The fugu, which is a highly held delicacy in Japan, is poisonous, and can even be deadly. Only chefs with special permits may prepare it, by using a special technique that rids the fish of the poison.
- Caviar comes from sturgeons.
- You’d like to eat some crab, but don’t want to fuss around with all the prep work? Try soft shell crabs! These delicacies are caught right after they shed their shells, and can be prepared and eaten in whole, with their claws and legs attached.
- The so-called fish head steamboat is a well-liked dish in Singapore. A big pot is placed in the middle of a table, filled with fish head soup. Vegetables and further pieces of fish can be added to liking.
- The skin of fish is completely edible after descaling.
- In Iceland there is also a poisonous fish being eaten: Hákarl is made from Greenland shark meat, which is poisonous without proper preparation. The shark meat is initially buried in sand, which enables the fermentation process and rids the meat of toxins. Then comes the drying process, for which the pieces of meat are hanged up. After this process, the meat can be consumed safely.
- Surströmming is a fermented baltic herring. The fish is fermented for 6 months in salt. It’s aroma is so pungeant, that it’s consumption is highly advised to take place outdoors.
- The eyes of fish are eaten in China.
- Codfish can grow to be enormous.
- Soft roe is the milt of male fish, and is sold in sacks in the UK.
